Dee Edwards
Dee transitioned to whatever awaits us after we pass, on December 14, due to throat cancer that had metastasized into her bones. She was accepting of this and ready to meet again with her husband, Teddy, who had passed in 2019.
Dee made so many friends within Village Santa Cruz because she was a joiner and a helper. Dee often volunteered when another Village member needed help. Her caring was deep.
Dee was a member of Aptos Circle, Solo Agers, Bocce, and Rummikub Social Club. She led the Guided Meditation group. I can still hear her instructing us in a gentle voice, "Go to your happy place."
Dee was an inspiration, finding her own happy place even during her most difficult circumstances. She was a great model of how to live life and approach death. Dee, you remain in our hearts.
A memorial will be scheduled at a later date. | | | |

STEP: Strategic Transitions and Planning
workshops to gather what's important
In Partnership with the Aptos library
in person at the Aptos Library
also on zoom
FREE and open to the public
We are excited to announce that because of your generosity through Santa Cruz Gives, Village Santa Cruz has raised enough money to purchase the license and support for Preparing for Life's Transitions, officially known as STEP: Strategic Transitions & Essential Planning.
STEP is a fully developed proven curriculum. In six workshops over six months, we will cover: personal information, legal, medical, financial, insurance, real estate, living options, daily living, crisis plan, home health, hospice and end of life.
Experts in these fields will discuss important points and answer questions. Attendees would have a complete record, revisable as circumstances change, and easy to locate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why is this important for each of you, no matter your age? Check out this Good Times December 23, 2025 article, "Be Prepared: Village Santa Cruz County wants to help locals expect the unexpected". Read the article.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The STEP license includes an online document of 60-page writable PDF forms and useful information. During these last days of the SCGives campaign, we hope to raise a little more money, so that Community Printers can print all materials, which we'll collate in a binder for each participant.
You've been so generous, with us and with all of the 73 nonprofit organizations. If able, will you donate for this last piece?
SCGives ends midnight December 31

Thank you for your support

January Book Group Read
"Twice" by Mitch Albom. Twice is an exploration of love, time, and the consequences of our choices. Alfie Logan can relive any moment in his life once, choosing a different path the second time—but never without consequence. The gift comes with strict limitations: mortality cannot be changed, and the second version becomes the only reality for everyone but Alfie.

Other Recommendations:
"The Scent Keeper" by Erica Bauermeister. Emmeline lives on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in the drawers that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them.
"Flesh" by David Szalay. Flesh tells the story of István, a young boy whose life is irrevocably altered by a traumatic relationship with an older woman. The narrative spans decades, chronicling István's journey from adolescence in Hungary to adulthood in London, where he navigates the complexities of wealth, power, and emotional detachment.
"Front Street" by Brian Barth. Blending memoir, investigative reporting, history and cultural criticism, the book paints a picture of a community searching for dignity and connection within the Bay Area's homeless encampments.

Recommendations from
the TV/Movie Discussion Group
"This is Going to Hurt," British, Netflix, an intense medical drama/comedy that focuses on the lives of a group of junior doctors working on an obstetrics and gynecology ward in a National Health Service hospital.
"Man vs. Baby," British, Netflix, a lighthearted TV series perfect for the holidays starring Rowan Atkinson, aka Mr. Bean. Trevor Bingley has taken a quiet job as a school caretaker. A lucrative Christmas penthouse gig becomes problematic —when no one collects the Baby Jesus from the school nativity, Trevor finds himself with an unexpected companion over the holidays.
"Marriage Story," American, Netflix, a 2019 film that explores a couple going through a bi-coastal divorce complicated by custody issues surrounding their son. Starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. This film got a lot of buzz when it first came out six years ago.
"Too Much," Netflix, a romantic comedy limited series created by Lena Dunham and Luis Felber, starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe. After a traumatic breakup, the main female character goes to London and begins a romance with a British man, and they must wade through a lot of personal history to sustain the relationship.

Older adults may struggle to learn a new language but classes are a worthwhile exercise, by December 15, 2025, by Stephen Wade, Associated Press. “Trying to learn a language late in life is a great idea, but understand it won’t make you bilingual and is probably too late to provide the protective effects of cognitive aging that come from early bilingualism. However, learning a new language is a stimulating and engaging activity that uses all of your brain, so it is like a whole-body exercise.” Read the article here.
